Hygiene Nonwoven Fabric — Frequently Asked Questions

What GSM nonwoven fabric is used for a baby diaper topsheet?

Most commercial diaper topsheets use hydrophilic spunbond PP between 12 and 16 GSM. Premium and ultra-thin diapers go as low as 10 GSM; economy and adult-size products go up to 18 GSM. The right weight depends on your converting line speed and the absorbent core design underneath — a lighter topsheet needs a well-matched acquisition layer to avoid rewet. Read our GSM selection guide for the full chart.

What is the difference between hydrophilic and hydrophobic nonwoven for hygiene products?

Hydrophilic fabric is surface-treated to let fluid pass through quickly — it is used wherever liquid must reach the absorbent core, so topsheets and acquisition layers. Hydrophobic fabric repels fluid and is used wherever liquid must be held back: backsheets, leg cuffs and standing gathers. The treatment is applied at finishing and is specified per roll, so a single order can contain both.

Can Olefins match an existing diaper fabric specification?

Yes. Send your current specification sheet or a physical sample and we will produce a comparison sample matched on GSM, tensile strength, elongation, strike-through and hand feel. Sample dispatch is within 2 business days. Request a comparison sample.

What is the minimum order quantity for hygiene nonwoven fabric?

Trial and development orders start at 1 metric tonne per specification. Regular supply is quoted per container or per monthly tonnage commitment. Contact us with your GSM, width and estimated monthly volume for exact MOQ and pricing.

Technical Specifications: What Makes Our Hygiene Fabric Different

Olefins hygiene nonwoven fabrics are engineered to meet the strictest requirements of disposable hygiene product manufacturers. Every roll is produced under ISO 13485:2016 quality management with full batch traceability from polymer to finished fabric.

1. Skin Safety & Biocompatibility

All hygiene grades are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I certified — safe for direct prolonged contact with infant skin. We use only virgin polypropylene resin with no recycled content, optical brighteners, or harmful additives. Our fabrics pass ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing for cytotoxicity, skin irritation, and sensitization. This is critical for diaper topsheets and sanitary napkin coverstock where 24/7 skin contact occurs.

2. Advanced Hydrophilic Treatment Technology

Our proprietary durable hydrophilic finish ensures rapid liquid acquisition while maintaining low rewet values even after multiple insults. Unlike topical surfactants that wash off, our treatment is integrated into the fiber matrix during spinning. Result: strike-through time ≤3 seconds and rewet ≤0.2g per EDANA WSP 70.3 standard. We also offer permanent hydrophilic grades for adult incontinence products requiring 8+ hour wear time.

3. GSM Consistency & Roll Uniformity

Using Reicofil 4S technology with in-line beta-gauge monitoring, we maintain GSM tolerance of ±3% across the full 3.2m roll width. This consistency is non-negotiable for high-speed converting lines running 600+ diapers per minute. Uneven GSM causes web breaks, misalignment, and waste. Every Olefins shipment includes a GSM uniformity report with 5-point measurements per roll.

Custom Development & OEM Supply Process

We partner with hygiene brands to develop custom nonwoven specifications for new product launches or cost-optimization projects.

Barrier level is a property of the finished garment, not the fabric alone. Olefins supplies fabric with the test data needed to support your garment certification.

Certification & Documentation

Olefins supplies medical-grade nonwoven fabric with full lot-level test documentation covering GSM (ISO 9073-1), tensile strength (ISO 9073-3), hydrostatic head (EN 20811) and synthetic blood penetration resistance (ASTM F1670). We provide complete test reports and material safety data sheets with every order to support your garment-level AAMI PB70, EN 13795, or FDA 510k submission. Full detail is in our guide to medical nonwoven fabric certifications.

Medical Nonwoven Fabric — Frequently Asked Questions

What AAMI level do I need for a surgical gown?

Level 3 is the minimum for moderate fluid exposure in surgery. Level 4 is required for high-risk procedures with known pathogen exposure. The exact level is specified by your hospital or device regulator. We supply SMMS 45-60 GSM for Level 3, and SMMS 60-70 GSM or film laminate for Level 4, with ASTM F1671 test data.

Can Olefins provide fabric for EO or gamma sterilisation?

Yes. Our SMS and SMMS fabrics are compatible with ethylene oxide (EO) and gamma irradiation sterilisation. We provide post-sterilisation test data on request to support your sterile barrier system validation.

Do you hold ISO 13485 certification?

Olefins is ISO 9001:2015 certified for quality management. We do not hold ISO 13485. We supply fabric with full lot-level test data — GSM, tensile, hydrostatic head, and ASTM F1670 — for your garment-level ISO 13485 or FDA 510k submission.

What is the difference between AAMI PB70 and EN 13795?

AAMI PB70 is the US standard that defines barrier levels 1-4 based on water resistance and blood penetration. EN 13795 is the European standard for surgical gowns and drapes, with "Standard" and "High Performance" classifications. The test methods overlap. We supply data for both standards on request.

Medical Nonwoven Fabric Manufacturing: Cleanroom to Converting

Olefins medical fabrics are manufactured in ISO Class 8 cleanroom-equivalent environments to prevent particulate contamination. Our Reicofil 4S lines use dedicated polymer handling systems for medical grades — no cross-contamination with industrial or hygiene lines.

1. Raw Material Selection & Traceability

We use only FDA-compliant virgin polypropylene resins from ExxonMobil and LyondellBasell. Every batch includes USP Class VI biocompatibility certification and DMF letters for FDA 510(k) submissions. Full lot traceability is maintained from polymer pellet to finished roll — critical for medical device manufacturers facing FDA audits. Resin certificates, migration test data, and irradiation stability reports are provided with each shipment.

2. Sterilization Compatibility Testing

Our SMMS medical fabrics are validated for Ethylene Oxide (EO), Gamma irradiation at 25-50 kGy, and E-beam sterilization. Post-sterilization testing confirms no degradation in tensile strength, elongation, or barrier performance. We provide sterilization validation reports per ISO 11135 and ISO 11137 standards. This data supports your device master file and reduces your qualification timeline by 6-8 weeks.

3. In-Line Quality Control & Lab Testing

Every master roll undergoes 100% in-line testing for GSM uniformity using beta-gauge, pinhole detection via light table inspection, and barrier testing. Our in-house lab performs AAMI PB70 hydrostatic head testing, ASTM F1670 synthetic blood penetration, and EN 13795 microbial penetration resistance. Test reports with actual values — not ranges — accompany every lot. We retain samples for 5 years for regulatory traceability.

Choosing the Right Medical Fabric for Your Application

Selecting fabric for medical devices requires balancing barrier performance, breathability, comfort, and cost. Wrong selection leads to failed biocompatibility tests or uncomfortable end-products.

Safety Nonwoven Fabric FAQs

What is Type 5 vs Type 6 protective clothing?

Type 6 — EN 13034 covers limited liquid splash protection using 40–60 GSM spunbond PP. Type 5 — EN ISO 13982-1 covers airborne solid particulate protection using 45–65 GSM SMS/SMMS. Type 5/6 combined garments meet both standards using 50–70 GSM SMMS for particulate + light splash protection. Types 1-4 require microporous film laminates and are outside Olefins' spunbond and spunmelt range.

What GSM is used for disposable coveralls?

Basic Type 6 coveralls use 40–60 GSM spunbond PP for liquid splash resistance. Type 5 particulate protection requires 45–65 GSM SMS. For combined Type 5/6 protection, 50–70 GSM SMMS is standard. Heavier 70–80 GSM is used for reusable or enhanced durability workwear. Olefins supplies spunbond and SMS/SMMS grades from 20–80 GSM for all protective clothing classes.

Do you supply antistatic fabric as per EN 1149-5?

Yes. Olefins supplies antistatic-treated spunbond and SMS in any GSM with surface resistivity per EN 1149-5 for electrostatic dissipative protective clothing. Required for ATEX zones, electronics cleanrooms, and fuel handling applications. Antistatic treatment prevents static discharge that could ignite flammable atmospheres. Available in any Pantone colour with 1,000 kg minimum for custom colours.

What is the difference between SMS and SMMS for PPE?

SMS = Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond with one meltblown layer. SMMS = Spunbond-Meltblown-Meltblown-Spunbond with dual meltblown layers. SMMS gives higher particulate filtration efficiency and better Type 5 protection under EN ISO 13982-1. SMS is sufficient for Type 6 liquid splash per EN 13034. Both can be antistatic treated per EN 1149-5. SMMS is specified for Level 2–3 surgical gowns and combined Type 5/6 coveralls.

PPE Fabric Performance: Key Test Data & Buyer Requirements

European and global PPE buyers specify nonwoven fabric against EN standards with documented test values. Olefins provides full test data with every lot to support your CE marking and product certification.

1. EN 13034 Type 6 — Limited Liquid Splash Protection

Type 6 coveralls protect against light spray and liquid aerosols in chemical handling, agriculture, and painting. Our 40-60 GSM spunbond PP achieves EN 13034 compliance through hydrophobic treatment with contact angle >90°. Fabric passes ISO 6530 repellency test for 30% sulfuric acid, 10% sodium hydroxide, o-xylene, and butanol. Spray impact penetration ≤1% per EN 468. Seam strength tested per ISO 13935-2 exceeds 75N to prevent burst during movement. We supply actual test values: our standard 50 GSM spunbond averages 0.3% penetration against water spray.

2. EN ISO 13982-1 Type 5 — Airborne Solid Particulate Protection

Type 5 protection is mandatory for asbestos removal, pharmaceutical powder handling, and hazardous dust environments. Our 45-65 GSM SMS achieves >95% particle filtration efficiency for 0.3 micron particles per EN ISO 13982-2 inward leakage test. The meltblown core provides the filtration barrier while spunbond layers add strength and abrasion resistance. Antistatic treatment per EN 1149-5 ensures surface resistivity 10^5-10^11 ohms to prevent dust attraction and electrostatic discharge in ATEX zones. Each roll tested for air permeability: 25-40 m³/m²/min at 200 Pa to balance protection with breathability.

3. EN 1149-5 Antistatic Performance for ATEX Zones

Oil & gas, paint shops, and electronics cleanrooms require antistatic PPE to prevent sparks. Our antistatic spunbond and SMS use durable carbon-based treatment that withstands 5 wash cycles. Surface resistance tested per EN 1149-1: 2.3 x 10^8 ohms average, well within the 10^5-10^11 ohm requirement. Charge decay time <0.5 seconds per EN 1149-3. Unlike topical sprays, our treatment is integrated during fiber extrusion and does not flake off. Certificate of conformity provided for each lot with actual resistivity values measured at 25°C, 30% RH.

Textile Nonwoven Fabric FAQs

What is fusible interlining nonwoven fabric?

Fusible interlining has a thermoplastic adhesive coating. It bonds to garment fabric when heat-pressed, giving collars and cuffs shape retention. We supply 20-80 GSM with dot or powder adhesive for apparel manufacturers.

What GSM is used for sofa dust cover?

Sofa dust cover or bottom cloth uses 40-70 GSM black or white spunbond. Key requirement is dimensional stability and low linting so fibers don't shed inside furniture. Also called cambric in bedding.

Do you supply UV stabilised fabric for agriculture?

Yes. Our crop cover and mulching fabric is UV stabiliser treated for 6-24 months outdoor life. Range: 17-50 GSM in white or black. Improves crop yield by regulating soil temperature and moisture.

What is AOS and permittivity in geotextiles?

AOS is Apparent Opening Size — controls soil particle retention. Permittivity measures water flow rate through the fabric. We test both for road, drainage & erosion control grades: 80-200 GSM.

Technical Deep-Dive: Geotextiles, Interlinings & Crop Covers

Textile and industrial nonwovens demand specific mechanical and environmental properties. Olefins engineers fabric to meet ASTM, ISO, and industry standards for each application.

1. Geotextile Nonwoven: Engineering for Civil Projects

Our 80-200 GSM spunbond geotextiles provide separation, filtration, drainage, and reinforcement functions in road construction, railways, and landfill sites. Key specifications: Grab Tensile Strength 400-900N per ASTM D4632, Puncture Resistance CBR 1500-3500N per ASTM D6241, and Apparent Opening Size AOS 0.15-0.30mm per ASTM D4751. High permittivity >0.2 sec⁻¹ ensures rapid water flow while retaining soil particles. UV-stabilized grades last 3+ years exposed. We supply test data for every lot: permittivity, AOS, trapezoidal tear, and UV resistance per ASTM D4355. Standard rolls: 3.2m x 100m or 200m, slit to project widths. Black and grey colors available to reduce photocatalytic degradation.

2. Nonwoven Interlining: Performance in Garment Manufacturing

Fusible and non-fusible interlinings require dimensional stability during cutting, sewing, and heat-pressing at 150-170°C. Our 20-80 GSM spunbond interlinings use low-melt adhesive dots or powder coating for fusible grades. Key parameters: Shrinkage <1% at 150°C, peel strength >6N/5cm per ISO 9073-4, and hand feel optimized for collars, cuffs, and waistbands. Non-fusible sew-in grades provide bulk without adhesive. All interlinings are lint-free to prevent contamination in cutting rooms. We match stiffness to your requirement — soft drape for shirts, firm body for jackets. OEKO-TEX Class I certification ensures no skin irritation for shirt collars and cuffs.

3. Agricultural Nonwoven: Crop Protection & Yield Improvement

Crop cover fabric must balance light transmission, air permeability, and UV life. Our 17-50 GSM UV-stabilized spunbond provides 85-90% light transmission while blocking insects and reducing wind damage. Treated with HALS UV stabilizers for 12-24 month outdoor life per ASTM G154 QUV testing. Black mulch fabric suppresses weeds by blocking 99% light while warming soil 3-5°C for earlier harvests. Water permeability >300 L/m²/s allows rain and irrigation through. Widths up to 3.2m seamless, or heat-welded to 6m+ for large fields. We also supply white frost protection fabric that raises temperature 2-4°C on cold nights while preventing leaf burn from direct contact.
